Zero One Vintners 2015 Sauce Red Wine, Columbia Valley, $15
Best Buy! Longtime vintner Thomas Vogele and his wife, Kristin, founded Zero One Vintners a decade ago in Kirkland, Wash., and they’ve enjoyed critical acclaim for their Sauce program among California wine competition judges. A key component to their success is their relationship with Wahluke Wine Co., and Milbrandt vineyards such as Purple Sage, Sundance and Wahluke Slope were blended into this Merlot-based bargain that’s rounded out by Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Petit Verdot (3%). There’s an inviting spice note to the nose, along with sugared plums, currant, bittersweet chocolate and Jolly Rancher grape candy. Flavors of blackberry jam and white pepper are joined by a pleasing amount of grip to contrast the sweet cherry and milk chocolate finish.
