Mercer Family Vineyards 2016 Edge of Heaven Blend Red Wine, Horse Heaven Hills, $17
By Great Northwest Wine on August 14, 2018
Prosser native Jeremy Santo weaves a delicious tapestry from Mercer plantings throughout Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills for this Merlot-based blend. Two of the varieties that the Mercer vineyards are best known for — Syrah (31%) and Malbec (16%) — support the Merlot (39%), and the barrel program is alluring. A sweet and spicy aromatic blend of cherry cola, clove and crushed red pepper flakes leads to rich and juicy flavors of blackcurrant juice, licorice and caramel, a trail that finishes with well-managed blueberry skin tannins and makes for a nicely textured and super-tasting wine.
