Orenda Winery 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $37

Snoqualmie Valley vintners Xander and Samantha Kent, inspired in part by Larry Lindvig of Pleasant Hill Cellars, teammed with Woodinville winemaker Mark Bosso for this Cabernet Sauvignon, a product of Orenda’s second commercial vintage. Fruit from Stillwater Creek Vineyard along the Royal Slope spent 24 months in French oak and opens with crushed blackberries, cassis, mint-tinged earth, and milk chocolate. It is rich and expressive in the mouth, full bodied and brooding with firm grip. This earned a double gold medal at the Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition last fall, which played a role in Wine Press Northwest magazine naming Orenda Winery at its 2020 Washington Winery to Watch.
