O’Rourke’s Peak Cellars 2019 Block 11 Riesling, Okanagan Valley, $28

By on January 14, 2021

There’s no shortage of all-star talent at construction contractor Dennis O’Rourke’s exciting and expansive young project in the Okanagan Valley’s Lake Country north of Kelowna. Stephanie Stanley, a protege of acclaimed winemaker Howard Soon, built her résumé in the province at the Wayne Gretzky and Peller Estates programs in the Okanagan then Fitzpatrick Family Vineyards before taking over at O’Rourke’s Peak in 2017. Stanley and O’Rourke’s Peak had a remarkable run of gold medals in international judgings last year, which included the Cascadia International for this fun and lively off-dry expression of Mosel clone 21B Riesling that’s loaded with fruit. Tangelo, apricot and restrained diesel start the party and are followed with Key lime and honeysuckle on the palate. The acid is pleasing and balances the light (3%) sweetness, ending with pretty floral notes rather than sugar.
