Pomeroy Cellars 2017 Lucia No. 47 Red Wine, Yakima Valley $43

Dan Brink’s great-great grandfather homesteaded the Pomeroy Farm in 1910, but their estate winery along Lucia Falls Road north of Vancouver, Wash., invests in fruit from prized DuBrul Vineyard on the other side of the Cascades for this annual blend. Brink, a former professional golfer, continues to lead with two barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) from the Shiels family, but this bottling saw Merlot (25%) catch up to Syrah (25%) for the final blend. The result draws you in with deep scents of rich blackberry, cocoa powder and cedar. Blackcurrant and a turn of a pepper mill marry with hints of leather and earth. Subtle tannins make this a versatile choice for the dining table, and it was awarded a gold medal last fall at the 2020 Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition. The judging is staged on behalf of some of the Northwest’s leading wine buyers, merchants, sommeliers and writers.
