Among the programs that are definitely on the rise in Washington state is Dr. Brian Petersen’s winery near the gateway to Puget Sound’s Hood Canal. Critical to his recent success is the investment in vineyard sourcing, and this Left Bank Bordeaux angle features Cabernet Sauvignon from Double Canyon and Phinny Hill (Horse Heaven Hills), Kiona (Red Mountain) and Pepper Bridge (Walla Walla Valley) as well as Cabernet Franc from Rattlesnake Hills sources Dineen and Pollard. While a winter storm led to the destruction of the SS Dauntless in 1923, pushing it across the Puget Sound from Kingston to Meadow Point near Ballard, this bottling is a pleasure cruise. It begins with aromas of a Hostess berry pie, lime zest and a savory hint of black olive. The drink is bright and balanced while carrying a youthful charm with sweet red fruit akin to Cherry Nibs and a cranberry cocktail.
