Twice in the past three vintages our panel has given Wayne Bailey’s Pinot Gris our top rating, which shows how well this vineyard just outside of McMinnville, Ore., performs in a warm vintage (2020) and one that slowed down (2018). From the block named for the Baileys’s youngest daughter come inviting aromas of Elberta peach and citrus pick up a rub of lavender. The fruit turns a bit riper and more tropical on the palate as bite of white peach and a squirt of blood orange lead into a finish of mango. That sweet tropical note in the back should lend this deliciously with softer cheeses such as Gruyère and Muenster, or spicy dishes, including a bowl of hearty chili.
