Best Buy! A longtime member of the team at Waterbrook in Walla Walla, Cesar Cuellar’s responsibilities for Precept Wine include overseeing the winemaking for this consumer-focused label with a lineage that began in 1984 and includes Staton Hills in the Yakima Valley. Two large plantings within 20 minutes of each other — Goose Ridge and Canyon Vineyard Ranch — contribute to the ultimate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (87%), Malbec (10%) and Merlot from a vintage that ranks among Washington state’s most giving. Cuellar has bottled an expression of Cab that’a a quaffer, a drink of dark cherry, blackcurrant and sugared plum that spills out in a plush and hedonistic fashion. It’s not one of the cellar, more like a tailgate bash or that first glass after getting off work, yet the bright finish of Marionberry juice adds to the balance. These wines can be found on grocery shelves at select Fred Meyer, Safeway and QFC locations.
