The Sparkmans dipped their toes in the world of commercial winemaking during the 2004 vintage, and a Right Bank-style blend of Bordeaux varieties was among the first three projects. Nine vintages later, the 2017 Honorary Vintner at the Auction of Washington Wines continues to honor eldest daughter Ruby Leigh with this beautiful blend of Merlot (56%), Cabernet Franc (22%), Cabernet Sauvignon (11%) and Malbec. The family’s hands-on winemaker, Seattle’s Linn Scott, creates aromas of fresh-cut cedar, blueberry and pomegranate that are backed by vanilla, clove and nutmeg. Sublime tannins allow for long and easy-to-enjoy flavors of spicy plum, elderberry and blueberry, leaving just enough room to pick out orange oil and rose petals. Many of the Sparkman wines are available via Amazon in addition to their Woodinville tasting room.
