Red Lily Vineyards 2014 Stargazer Lily Verdejo, Applegate Valley, $22
By Great Northwest Wine on February 26, 2016
The noble white grape of the Rueda region, Verdejo plantings throughout Spain combine for an estimated 40,000 acres. (That’s about where Washington state’s entire vineyard plantings for all wine grapes were a decade ago.) Verdejo’s calling card is its aromatic profile, and Southern Oregon grower/winemaker Rachael Martin illustrates that with a fruit-forward nose of pineapple and lemon, backed by dusty Bosc pear and honeydew melon. Inside, it’s akin to a fruit salad with its off-dry approach. Sweet lemon, honey and a touch of minerality make for a long and pleasing finish.
