19. Saviah Cellars 2009 Big Sky Cuvée, Columbia Valley, $35

saviah-cellars-big-sky-cuvee-bottleWalla Walla’s Richard Funk continues to confirm his place among the region’s top red winemakers. The latest honor came last month when this blend of Merlot (56%), Cabernet Sauvignon (24%) and Cabernet Franc (12%) from Stillwater Creek near Royal City, Wash., — combined by Malbec and Petit Verdot from McClellan Estate in the Walla Walla Valley — earned best of show at the Washington State Wine Competition. The aromatic profile features dark purple fruit, think plums and blackberry, with classic notes of cassis, pencil shavings and cedar. There’s a stylish presentation of blackberries on the entry, backed by red currant and thyme. It is properly framed by gravelly tannins. Enjoy with robust meats, and contact the tasting room for a beautiful etched large-format bottle of this trophy wine.
