Marchesi Vineyards 2012 Emma Sangiovese, Columbia Valley, $28
By Great Northwest Wine on January 5, 2014
Franco Marchesi grew up in Piedmonte, made his living in the Bay Area as a sommelier and importer, then launched his winery a decade ago in Hood River, Ore. Here, he continues his string of success with this variety, starting with enticing aromas of cherries, chocolate-covered strawberry and cinnamon. The juicy entry to the palate brings smooth flavors of plums and sweet black currant, backed by a good grip of tannins and lengthy push of cranberry acidity. His wines are available at many of the Columbia Gorge’s top restaurants, the Herbfarm in Woodinville, Wash., and in his tasting room, which is open every weekend.
