24. DeLille Cellars 2012 D2 Red Wine, Columbia Valley, $49

delille-cellars-d2-2012-bottleThanks to Chris Upchurch and his team in Woodinville, the honorary vintner for the 2015 Auction of Washington Wines has created another trophy wine of Bordeaux varieties worthy for the cellar that’s also ready to celebrate with now. Nearly 20 lots from historic vineyards such as Boushey, Ciel du Cheval, Harrison Hill, Klipsun, May’s Discovery, Red Willow and Upchurch have parts to play in this blend of Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (42%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot. DeLille spared little expense on barrels — investing in 75% new French oak for 20 months — to create aromas of black cherry, baking spices, bittersweet chocolate, dark toast and light charcoal. Dark cherry, black currant and blackberry stand out much more on the palate, which is full bodied with dusty bittersweet chocolate tannins and age-worthy acidity. Its smooth finish also brings a sense of minerality. And thankfully, there is plenty to go around.
