Northwest Tempranillos gaining steam

Daven Lore Winery 2013 Tempranillo, Snipes Mountain, $29

daven-lore-winery-tempranillo-2013-bottleCanadian-born winemaker Gordon Taylor made it to the 18th hole of last year’s U.S. Open with his 2012 Tempranillo – poured in the Washington State Wine Commission tent. His latest bottling from grapes picked Sept. 28 off the Newhouse family’s Upland Vineyard offers a nose of Bing cherry, dark boysenberry and cocoa powder with touches of vanilla, sarsaparilla, fresh dill and lime peel. The tannin management with this typically burly Iberian grape is remarkable, allowing for easy enjoyment of dusty black cherry and dark blueberry. Those minerally tannins and ripe pomegranate acidity make for delicious length that Taylor favors with paella, Pasta Fagioli, roasted pork or Spaghetti Carbonara.
