Gamache Vintners 2009 Gamache • Champoux Barrel Select Nicolas Reserve, Columbia Valley, $55
A part of the Gamache brothers’ Heritage Series, this blend of estate Bordeaux varieties with fruit from Champoux Vineyard (38%) achieves astounding harmony and complexity in the hands of Charlie Hoppes and Mitch Venohr. The Meritage-style melange of Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), Cabernet Franc (25%) and Merlot brings out aromas of red currant, black cherry, plum jam, chocolate, cedar and porcini mushroom. Inside, it’s a nice example of Bordeaux with ripe red fruit, bittersweet chocolate tannins and good acidity, capped by bits of black olive bite and bell pepper. It serves as a graceful use of 100% new French oak barrels.
Rating: Outstanding!
Production: 205 cases
Alcohol: 14.6%
