AniChe Cellars 2012 Sirius, Horse Heaven Hills $28
Rachael Horn established AniChe Cellars in the hills just west of the White Salmon River with a view of the Columbia River and Hood River, Ore., below. However, much of the vision for her wines begins in the Horse Heaven Hills, and she’s developed an exceptional reputation with racy red blends, including her popular Italian-themed creation with Barbera (60%), Zinfandel (25%) and Dolcetto. Bright red currant and raspberry aromas pick up some oak toast, and the palate turns a bit darker with black currant, black cherry and cocoa powder for a rich and delicious drink that quickly became a fan-favorite — as well as Horn’s “pizza wine.” It also earned a silver medal at the fall Columbia Gorge Wine Competition.
