Ponzi Vineyards 2013 Reserve Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, $60
Second-generation winemaker Luisa Ponzi continues to rely on her family’s L.I.V.E. certified sustainable vineyards – Abetina, Aurora and Madrona – as well as Linda Vista, but in 2013 lots from Kason, Walnut Ridge and Zenith were recruited into the Reserve program. Meanwhile, she dialed back her use of new French barrels from the 2012 vintage – going from 50% to 30% – and the results after 20 months are stellar. The beautiful nose of Bing cherry and dried strawberry includes sweet spice accents of cinnamon and cocoa powder. Ripe strawberry and Rainier cherry flavors lead to a vibrant midpalate of rhubarb jam. Supple tannins and a tasty finish of cranberry juice make for beautiful balance and thoughts of Duck Confit.
