Oregon’s Reustle scores again in California wine judging

SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Southern Oregon’s Stephen Reustle continues to show why he deserves to be considered one of the nation’s top winemakers.

The owner of Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards in Roseburg, Ore., earned best dessert wine at Dan Berger’s International Wine Competition in Northern California.

Reustle’s 2013 Rojo Dulce, a fortified dessert wine using the traditional Portuguese variety Tinta Roriz – aka Tempranillo – was voted top dessert wine by the panel of international judges.

Earlier this year, Reustle won five gold medals at the Savor NW Wine Awards and three gold medals at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

Last year, his Syrah was rated best in the New World at the Six Nations Wine Challenge. He also won two unanimous Double Platinums at Wine Press Northwest magazine’s year-end best-of-the-best judging.

Woodhouse Wine Estates in Woodinville, Wash., earned a best-of-class award for its 2012 Reserve Riesling, as did Latah Creek Wine Cellars in Spokane for its 2015 Moscato.

Maryhill Winery in Goldendale, Wash., won two unanimous Chairman’s Awards and two additional gold medals.

And Red Rooster Winery in British Columbia brought home three gold medals.

Prior to this year, the competition was called the Riverside International Wine Competition and was staged in Southern California. This year, it was renamed Dan Berger’s International Wine Competition and moved to Northern California, where Berger lives.

Of the 32 judges at the DBIWC, three were from the Pacific Northwest: Ellen Landis of Vancouver, Wash.; Coke Roth of Richland, Wash.; and Andy Perdue of Great Northwest Wine.

Northwest wineries won more than 150 medals at this year’s judging. Here are the Northwest results.
