Reustle – Prayer Rock Vineyards in Southern Oregon continues to earn global acclaim for its work with Syrah by capturing the award for Best of Variety at the TEXSOM International Wine Awards last month in Irving, Texas.

Stephen Reustle’s 2017 Estate Winemaker’s Reserve Syrah from the Umpqua Valley was joined by the Willamette Valley Vineyards 2018 Pinot Gris as best-of-variety winners from the Pacific Northwest. Construction of the judging panel, which is dominated by Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers, makes TEXSOM among the most respected wine competitions in the world.

“This was the first time we entered TEXSOM,” Reustle said via email. “We only entered our Syrah and Grüner Veltliner to get a sense of the quality of judging as it may relate to our style of wine. I was very pleased to see our 2017 Estate Syrah take ‘Best of Variety.’ This follows on the heels of taking ‘Best Syrah’ at this year’s San Diego International Wine Competition. The Lord is blessing our socks off!”

Pacific Northwest winemakers received 13 Platinum medals, which meant each made it to the sweepstakes portion of their variety or class. In all, there were 49 entries from the Northwest that received a gold medal or better.

Those joining Reustle and Willamette Valley Vineyards as best-of-class winners and earning the elevated medal as a “Judges’ Selection” were Mark Ryan Winery 2017 Long Haul Merlot (Best Washington), 2Hawk Vineyard & Winery 2017 Grenache (Best Oregon Red), 00 Wines 2017 VGW Chardonnay (Best Oregon White), Clearwater Canyon Cellars 2017 Umiker Vineyard Estate Syrah (Best Other United States Red) and Cinder Wines 2018 Dry Viognier (Best Other United States White).

Next month, Reustle, Kiley Evans of 2Hawk, Coco Umiker from Lewiston, Idaho, and Cinder’s Melanie Krause in Boise, Idaho, will gather as judges for the eighth annual Cascadia International Wine Competition in Richland, Wash.

Those also recognized with a platinum medal at TEXSOM were Aquilini Red Mountain 2016 Family Blend, Cooper Ridge Vineyard 2018 Viognier, Spring Valley Vineyard 2016 Estate Nina Lee, Pfeiffer Winery 2015 Blue Dot Reserve Robin’s Romance Pinot Noir, Panther Creek Cellars 2016 De Ponte Vineyard Pinot Noir and Elk Cove Vineyards 2017 Mount Richmond Estate Pinot Noir.

“Wines demonstrating quality and unique character that are exceptional even amongst their medal-winning peers may be nominated by judging panels for specific Judges’ Selection categories,” organizers wrote. “All Judges’ Selection nominees are elevated to platinum medal. These platinum medal wines are blind tasted by special panels to award the winner for each category of Judges’ Selection medal. This year, 52 Judges’ Selection medals were awarded.”

The 2020 TEXSOM International Wine Awards received 2,875 entries from 19 states and 25 countries. This year’s panel included 19 Master Sommeliers and 16 Masters of Wine.

Wynne Peterson-Nedry helps young 00 Wines stand out

Among the Northwest highlights in the Dallas suburb was the repeated embrace for 00 Wines, the young project spearheaded by winemaker Wynne Peterson-Nedry for Chris and Kathryn Hermann at the Carlton (Ore.) Winemakers Studio in the Willamette Valley. In addition to the Judges’ Selection Award and platinum for the 2017 VGW Chardonnay, the second-generation winemaker also earned gold medals for her 2017 Richard Hermann Cuvée Pinot Noir and 2017 Hyland Pinot Noir.

Other multiple gold-medal winners from the Willamette were Archery Summit, Björnson Vineyard, Elk Cove Vineyards and Panther Creek Cellars. In all, there were 19 gold medals awarded to Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley.

Ste. Michelle Wine Estates shined at TEXSOM not only with its Spring Valley Vineyard program but also for gold medals by Chateau Ste. Michelle via the 2016 Special Sites Selection Cabernet Sauvignon and 2017 Eroica Riesling.

Krause, a former assistant winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle, displayed her talent and Idaho’s versatility by also winning a gold medal for her Cinder Wines 2016 Reserve Tempranillo with Snake River Valley grapes.

TEXSOM showcases So. Oregon diversity

Last month’s results at TEXSOM reinforced Oregon’s award-winning work extends beyond Pinot Noir.

For example, Cooper Ridge Vineyard in Southern Oregon’s Umpqua Valley earned a platinum for its 2018 Viognier and a gold medal for a 2015 Merlot. Farther south in the Applegate Valley, rancher-turned-winemaker Joe Ginet at Plaisance Ranch earned a gold for his 2017 Pearl Vineyard Pinot Noir, that was matched by his 2017 Papa Joe’s Private Stash Carménère.

And there’s Reustle’s history, which includes recognition as a U.S. pioneer for Grüner Veltliner, a pursuit inspired during a motorbike tour of Austria. However, the versatility of his site in the Umpqua Valley includes a string of international acclaim for his cool-climate approach to Syrah. The Reustle – Prayer Rock Vineyards 2012 Estate Masada Block Syrah topped the New World field at the 2015 Six Nations Wine Challenge in Australia.

“Six Nations has a special place in my heart as it put us on the map both nationally and internationally and for that I’m forever grateful,” Reustle said. “It appears our northern Rhône Crozes-Hermitage-style of Syrah is meeting with favor on a multitude of platforms.”

TEXSOM started in 1985 as the Dallas Morning News National Wine Competition, a judging spearheaded by Rebecca Murphy, a journalist who now owns Vintage Productions with offices in Seattle and Dallas. Drew Hendricks and James Tidwell, both Master Sommeliers, created TEXSOM as a professional beverage event in 2005, and three years later, the two somms blended Murphy’s competition into their operation.

This year, TEXSOM judges awarded 2,065 medals, led by 327 gold medals (12%), 815 silver (29%), and 927 bronze (33%). Retail prices of medal-worthy wines ranged from $2.64 to more than $700. The competition was staged Feb. 17-19 at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colina in Irving, Texas.
