L’Ecole No. 41 2011 Estate Ferguson Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley, $60
Made in an approach similar to the Apogee (Pepper Bridge Vineyard) and Perigee (Seven Hills Vineyard), this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), Merlot (32%) and Cabernet Franc is created to showcase Marty Clubb’s estate Ferguson Vineyard, an 18-acre site on fractured basalt that offers a dramatic view of the Walla Walla Valley. The barrel program of all French oak (50% new) creates aromas of fresh-baked brownie, crushed filbert and black cherry. There’s a core of dark plums and cherries on the entry, backed by pleasing chalkiness from tannin, Marionberry acidity and notes forest floor. Earlier this year, it was acclaimed as the Best Bordeaux Blend Over £15 at the Decanter World Wine Awards in London.
