KENNEWICK, Wash. — Lake Chelan winemaker Charlie Lybecker proved at the Tri-Cities Wine Festival that he has a particular flair when working with Rhône-style red blends under his Cairdeas Winery brand.
Last spring, his 2013 Tri Red Wine Blend won best of class at the Wenatchee Wine and Food Festival. On Saturday night, his young 2014 Tri ($39) — another blend of Syrah, Mourvédre and Grenache — received the award for best of show at the 38th Tri-Cities Wine Festival at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick.
Lybecker, who moved from West Seattle to Chelan in 2012 and planted vines, also earned gold medals for two other wines made from varieties native to the Rhone Valley — a 2014 Counoise and 2014 Caislén an Pápa red blend.
The Tri-Cities Wine Society estimated that 1,000 people attended this year’s festival, and members of the wine society conducted Washington state’s oldest wine competition from Nov. 1-3. A six-person panel of international judges evaluated 426 wines entered by 90 wineries, a field dominated by Washington. Festival organizers were busy presenting awards throughout the three-hour festival, where wineries poured samples of the 20 unanimous double gold medals, 93 gold medals, 205 silver medals and 82 bronze medals.
Sheri Morano, a Master of Wine from Chapel Hill, N.C., served on the Tri-City panel for her third time. She came away more impressed than ever before with the state of Washington wine industry.
“I felt the overall quality was extremely high,” she told Great Northwest Wine. “If I look back to when I was first here, which I think was in 2002, the overall quality has improved dramatically. You could see there was a lot of potential.”
She was joined on the panel by Eric Degerman, president of Great Northwest Wine; Andy Perdue, wine columnist for The Seattle Times; Shelly Fitzgerald, wine education specialist for Columbia Winery in Woodinville, Wash.; Harry McWatters, vintner, Penticton, British Columbia; and Brad Smith, instructor/winemaker at Yakima Valley Community College in Grandview.
Smasne Cellars mines 12 gold medals
In terms of total gold medals, Smasne Cellars in Prosser was the star of the judging. Robert Smasne produced three double golds — two of them best of class — and nine gold medals. His 12 gold medals represented nearly 11 percent of those awarded during the three-day judging.
Student-made wines turned heads, too. College Cellars of Walla Walla had two double golds, including the 2016 Muscat Ottonel, and a gold medal. Yakima Valley Vintners, the teaching winery at Yakima Valley Community College in Grandview, earned a gold medal for Primitivo, and its Red Backpack Red Wine — a $12 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Carménère — was in the running for best red wine.
Morano made headlines in the wine world in 2003, when, at the age of 28, she became the youngest woman from the U.S. to pass the rigorous examinations to join the Masters of Wine Institute. While Washington is known for Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, the graduate of Duke University also took special notice of wines such as the Basalt Cellars 2012 Malbec and gold-medal winning Carménère by Anelare and Smasne.
“It was interesting to see a focus on certain grape varieties and maybe a couple of others that are lesser known that Washington is not necessarily hanging its hat on them, but there’s potential there,” Morano said. “Like Malbec. We had some great Carménère, and there were a couple of really nice sparklings and some white blends I was pretty pleased with as well.
“Overall, there’s more than just the big reds,” she added. “But the big reds, quality-wise, that was pretty outstanding.”
