Eleven Winery 2011 Elephant Mountain Vineyard Syrah, Yakima Valley, $24
One of Washington state’s highest elevation vineyards — 1,460 feet — has become a garden spot for many of the region’s top artisan winemakers, and Matt Albee on Bainbridge Island ranks among those. His latest version of Joe Hattrup’s Syrah offers an array of Marionberry, plums and huckleberry aromas, backed by Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, smoked duck breast, charcoal and a spring of rosemary. It’s a lighter-styled drink of Syrah with a continued push of purple fruit, juicy acidity and a lingering finish of lime peel. In the past, his Elephant Mountain Syrah has been limited to wine club members, so ask for this at Albee’s tasting rooms on Bainbridge Island or in Poulsbo.
