Capstone Cellars 2007 Boushey Vineyards Syrah, Yakima Valley, $24
Longview, Wash., winemaker Roy Bays and Joel McNelly began their partnership more than a decade ago, and they’ve been working with Dick Boushey fruit virtually from the start. This bottling is drinking beautifully, and the use of French, American and Hungarian oak barrels is apparent early on as the aromas feature roasted coffee, molasses and walnut with touches of boysenberry, saddle leather and gaminess. There’s a greeting of black fruit on the palate with notes of dark plums, black currant and dried blueberry, backed by more coffee, walnut and brown sugar. Its structure is intense, yet balanced. This received a gold medal at the 2014 Capital Food and Wine Festival Wine Competition.
