Cedar River Cellars 2012 Watershed Merlot, Columbia Valley, $25

cedar-river-cellars-watershed-merlot-2012-labelThis marked the fourth commercial vintage for Renton, Wash., winemaker Micah Nasarow, and he continues to refine his vineyard sources. He’s found a sweet spot for Merlot with Burgess Vineyard near Pasco. The wine spent 16 months in used Gamba and Taransaud barrels, which help create aromas of dark blue fruit and poached cherry with tones of toasted marshmallow, smoked meat, woodruff and rose hips. There’s a steady stream of richness to the drink of black currant and blueberry, which lead to a smooth and creamy midpalate, followed by remarkable sandy tannins and a pleasing finish of Western serviceberry. Although he’s growing slowly and working with tiny lots, this young vintner already is set up to ship direct to more than a dozen states.
