Two Ponds 2012 Merlot, Columbia Valley, $11

two-ponds-merlot-nv-bottleBest Buy! Seattle-based Precept Wine named this label for the languid ponds between the tasting room and production facility at Waterbrook Winery in Walla Walla. John Freeman’s team has developed a rather complex Washington Merlot, particularly at this price point. Aromas of spicy oak, pomegranate, cola, coffee, bay leaf and alfalfa lead to flavors of cherry, blueberry and pomegranate. Resolved tannins and herbal notes make for a medium-bodied Merlot that’s food-friendly for beef, hearty soups and tomato-based dishes.
