Owen Roe 2014 DuBrul Vineyard Chardonnay, Yakima Valley, $48
Northwest winemaker David O’Reilly’s devotion to the Yakima Valley continues to show with this reserve-style Chardonnay farmed in the Rattlesnake Hills by the Shiels family of Côte Bonneville fame. The barrel program of French oak (30% new) generates a luxurious nose of fresh caramel and ghee with pretty notes of white peach, pear, saffron and white pepper. Its mouth feel is bright and complex with flavors of white pear, pear and apple butter as racy acidity runs through. The finish brings a light touch of butterscotch and lemon zest. Suggested pairings include pan-fried Maryland-style crab cakes or seared scallops with corn salad.
