Chateau Ste. Michelle 2014 Indian Wells Chardonnay, Columbia Valley, $18
The popularity of Chardonnay shows as Chateau Ste. Michelle has doubled its production of its Indian Wells bottling since 2012. White winemaker David Rosenthal shows delicious balance of fruit, oak and acidity, which starts with significant ripeness from sources such as the Wahluke Slope. Five months of surlie aging in a barrel program of 35% new oak makes for aromas of Spanish almond, butter, lemon curd and lemon pepper. Inside, the focus leans toward white peach, Gala apple and apricot as some buttery roundness on the midpalate finishes with nice acidity. Suggested pairings include scallops, scampi or Fettuccine Alfredo.
