Portlandia Vintners 2011 Pinot Noir, Oregon, $25
Seattle-based Rainier Wine Company has grown to five brands, with Oregon winemaker Judy Thoet overseeing this label. Larkin Vineyard, influenced by the Willamette Valley’s Van Duzer Corridor, forms the base of this expressive release, which sends out aromas of black cherry, plum jam and date paste with accents of truffle and pipe tobacco. A tilt brings in rich flavors of cordial cherry, raspberry and cocoa powder with gentle tannins. Breezy acidity gives it enough length to show off a hint of violet in the finish. The richness and subdued structure lend this for immediate enjoyment with suggested pairings that include braised shortribs or mushroom risotto.
