Walla Walla Vintners 2009 Malbec, Columbia Valley, $30
A combination of small production, large fan base, hot variety and talented winemaking meant the red-roofed cabin in Walla Walla sold through this vintage lickety-split. The thumbprint of expensive barrel aging shows immediately with aromas of vanilla bean, crushed walnut, maple syrup and cinnamon bark are joined by hints of blackberry, Damson plum and Jolly Rancher grape candy. There’s a rich entry of more plums and boysenberry, backed with chocolaty tannins and blueberry acidity. Those who appreciate Walla Walla Vintners’ often-generous use of oak will fall hard for this.
